Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has indicated he may have played his last match due to a shoulder injury.
Schmeichel has been advised that he needs two surgeries to address several issues, including a dislocated shoulder, a torn bicep, and damage to his rotator cuff and labrum.
At 39 years old, he could be out for 10 to 12 months, raising concerns about the end of his career. His contract with Celtic ends this summer.
“I saw a specialist yesterday (Monday). I’m going to need two surgeries to fix my shoulder, which is quite disappointing,” he told CBS Sports.
“I’ve torn the bicep, torn the rotator cuff, dislocated the shoulder, torn the labrum—everything’s gone wrong. To put it simply, it’s like an outfielder injuring their ACL and Achilles at the same time. It looks like 10-12 months of rehab ahead. It’s been a tough few days.”
“You don’t really know how to deal with this. I could have played my last football match. I’ve been playing football for as long as I can remember, and that thought is heartbreaking. It’s very hard to accept right now.”
This injury means Schmeichel, who has 120 caps for Denmark, will miss the upcoming World Cup qualification play-offs later this month. Chelsea’s Filip Jorgensen and West Ham’s Mads Hermansen are potential replacements.
