Charlotte FC coach Dean Smith has a clear message for his team ahead of Saturday night’s match against the Philadelphia Union: “No complacency.”

This is important, especially since Charlotte (2-1-2, 8 points) is currently fourth in the Eastern Conference after a strong 6-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on March 21. In contrast, Philadelphia has struggled, with a record of 0-5-0 after losing 2-1 to the Chicago Fire at home.

Charlotte’s only loss this season was against the Los Angeles Galaxy on February 28. They recorded two wins and one draw in March, with the draw occurring on March 14 when they played Inter Miami to a scoreless tie. Charlotte has allowed only three goals in four matches, aside from the three they conceded against the Galaxy.

Smith is cautious about underestimating their opponent. He stated, “Games aren’t played on paper.” He noted that the Union have faced injuries and some misfortune.

The Union’s performance this season is a sharp decline from last year when they won the Supporters’ Shield for the best regular-season record. The recent international break may have come at a good time for them.

Coach Bradley Carnell mentioned that the team has been using the bye week to reflect and find ways to secure a win. “There’s been a lot of meetings and a focus on training,” he said, emphasizing the team’s dedication to improving and preparing for Charlotte.

Carnell highlighted the need for discipline, as the Union have had two instances this season where they played with ten men due to red cards.

Philadelphia captain Alejandro Bedoya acknowledged the challenges, stating, “We have to take a hard look at ourselves from the top down.” Bedoya has contributed two assists this season, while the Union ranks last in MLS, having only scored three goals. In comparison, Pep Biel leads Charlotte with four goals.
