Charlotte FC has signed midfielder Luca de la Torre from Celta Vigo in LaLiga, effective Tuesday.

The 27-year-old, who has been part of the U.S. men’s national team, is signed until June 2029, with an option for 2030.

Last season, he was on loan at San Diego FC, where he scored five goals and made one assist in 30 MLS matches, with 24 of those as starts.

Charlotte secured his league rights from San Diego in exchange for $50,000 in general allocation money.

Charlotte general manager Zoran Krneta stated, “Luca is entering the prime of his career and will enhance our midfield with his technical skills and experience from a leading league, along with his understanding of Major League Soccer.”

Krneta added that De la Torre fits well with the current squad, describing him as a versatile central midfielder who effectively connects play and advances the ball. The club aims to attract more USMNT players, and De la Torre is eager to play in Charlotte.

On the international stage, De la Torre has one goal in 32 appearances with the U.S. team. He was part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad and has participated in the 2024 Copa America and the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Before his time in MLS, he scored seven goals and provided 16 assists over 150 matches in Europe, playing for Celta Vigo (2022-25), Heracles Almelo in the Netherlands (2020-22), and Fulham in England (2016-20).

Charlotte will begin the 2026 MLS season on February 21 against St. Louis City.
