Kerwin Vargas and Pep Biel scored within the first 10 minutes of the second half as Charlotte FC set a new team record for goals, defeating the New York Red Bulls 6-1 on Saturday night.

Biel assisted Idan Toklomati for a header in the 14th minute, while Charlotte (2-1-2, 8 points) managed to hold over 60% possession during the first half, despite New York attempting 10 shots.

After scoring four goals in their previous matches, Charlotte took advantage of New York’s mistakes to secure the win early in the second half.

Vargas scored from the center of the box after New York’s Omar Valencia failed to intercept a pass from Djibril Diani. Vargas took possession and sent a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner.

A red card was issued to New York’s Gustav Berggren in the 52nd minute for a foul on Toklomati, leading to a free kick.

Biel took the free kick, and his left-footed shot from outside the box penetrated New York’s defensive wall, finding the bottom left corner.

Wilfried Zaha added another goal in the 68th minute, matching Charlotte’s record of four goals, a feat they’ve achieved five times before. Archie Goodwin capped the scoring with a goal in the 77th minute and another in the third minute of stoppage time.

Julian Hall scored late for New York, which attempted 23 shots. Goalie Kristijan Kahlina made seven saves, including two crucial saves on Mohammed Sofo and Valencia shortly after Charlotte increased their lead to three goals.
