Reece James acknowledged that Chelsea’s mistakes led to their defeat against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The team started strong and scored first with a somewhat lucky goal from João Pedro after 37 minutes, following a corner kick from James.
However, the match changed when substitute Ollie Watkins equalized just after the hour mark. He later scored the winning goal, widening the gap between Chelsea and Villa to ten points.
“It’s always disappointing to lose at home,” James told Sky Sports. “We controlled the game for about 60 or 65 minutes. They didn’t create chances in the first half until they got one, and everything changed after that.
“We started well, playing the way we intended. But in the second half, a couple of moments shifted the momentum in their favor.
“Their substitutions altered the game slightly, but it’s nothing we shouldn’t be able to handle. We’ve faced them before and know how they play. We aimed for a win but fell short, and that’s really disappointing.”
When asked what Chelsea could have improved, James said: “We need to keep the ball out of our net. It’s that straightforward. A couple of mistakes led to the corner and then to Ollie’s first goal. We have to take responsibility for those errors. This league is the toughest in the world.”
