The Chelsea board will meet today to discuss the future of manager Enzo Maresca, who may be dismissed before this weekend’s match against Manchester City.
Reports suggest that the Italian manager is close to losing his job due to a strained relationship with the club’s management.
Though Maresca received the Premier League Manager of the Month award for November, Chelsea managed to win only two out of eight matches in December.
Last month, following a 2-0 victory over Everton, he expressed dissatisfaction about the “worst 48 hours” he had faced at the club, mentioning a lack of support without going into details.
Maresca did not fulfill his media obligations after Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, a result that disappointed the home crowd. While illness was cited as the reason for his absence, journalist Ben Jacobs reported that he skipped the media session as he considers his options at the club.
The Times indicates that Chelsea will hold “crisis talks” regarding the manager’s future, while the Guardian states it is “highly likely” he will leave the club on Thursday.
Maresca reportedly “wants to leave the club, but it is uncertain if he will do so without a financial settlement.” He has three and a half years remaining on his contract, with an option for an extra year.
The former Leicester City manager was recently mentioned as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City when Guardiola decides to leave.
