Enzo Fernandez scored in stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw for Chelsea against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
Fernandez netted a last-minute equalizer, helping Chelsea avoid defeat and affecting City’s title hopes.
Prior to the match, Chelsea was without a head coach after Enzo Maresca’s departure on New Year’s Day.
The situation arose after Maresca had discussions with Manchester City regarding a potential future role, adding context to the match.
Tijjani Reijnders opened the scoring for Manchester City just before half-time, delivering a powerful shot past Chelsea’s stand-in goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.
City searched for a second goal, but Chelsea improved in the second half, ultimately earning their equalizer.
A low cross reached Fernandez at the back post, where he managed to score after Gianluigi Donnarumma failed to clear the ball.
The result places City in second in the Premier League, but they now trail Arsenal by six points after the Gunners’ victory at Bournemouth.
Chelsea sits fifth, ahead of Manchester United, and three points behind Liverpool as they fight for Champions League qualification.
James praises Chelsea unity after Maresca exit
Chelsea captain Reece James spoke to Sky Sports after the match, highlighting the team’s focus amidst uncertainty about the managerial situation.
“We had to put aside our earlier concerns and stick to the game plan. We made a minor mistake leading to their goal but got stronger in the second half, knowing a chance would come, and [Enzo Fernandez] finished it well.
“We need to stay united. Many players were missing today, but others stepped up. We fought as a team, and I am proud of our performance.”
