Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has stated that individuals who commit acts of racism do not belong in football.

His remarks follow an incident where Vinicius Junior was reportedly subjected to racist abuse during the recent UEFA Champions League match between Real Madrid and Benfica.

Ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League match against Burnley this Saturday, the 41-year-old advocated for lifetime bans for anyone found guilty of racism, asserting that “they shouldn’t be in the game.”

Chelsea boss Rosenior calls for bans over racist behaviour

“It’s upsetting. There needs to be context, but any form of racism, not just in football but in society, is unacceptable. I won’t comment on ongoing investigations, but when you see a player like Vinicius Jr visibly upset, there’s usually a significant reason behind it.”

“I have experienced racial abuse myself. When people are judged for something they should take pride in, it’s incredibly painful. Anyone—player, coach, or manager—found guilty of racism should not be part of football. It’s that straightforward.”

Responding to what needs to change, Rosenior said, “A lot of things need to change; this issue is complex involving race and gender, among other topics.”

“It’s disheartening. The discussion should extend beyond just football. There must be greater accountability to eliminate these issues.”

He added, “There is a significant division, and many in the media make quick judgments based on sexual orientation, nationality, religion, or skin color.”

“This is a broader conversation beyond football. People must be held more accountable, especially on social media and in the press, to ensure everyone is judged fairly based on their character.”

“If any player or coach is found guilty of racism, they shouldn’t be in the game. It is that simple.”

Benfica manager Jose Mourinho suggested after the match that Vinicius Jr’s goal celebration stirred the crowd.

When asked about Mourinho’s remarks, Rosenior stated: “Regardless of how a player chooses to celebrate, race should never be a factor.”

“I’m not familiar with the specifics of what Jose said, so I won’t comment until I have all the information.”
