Philip Zinckernagel scored just a minute into the game on Saturday night, and the Chicago Fire’s improved defense held strong, leading to a 1-0 victory against Nashville SC.

Chicago (3-2-1, 10 points) secured its second consecutive win and showcased strong defensive organization. They limited Nashville (4-1-1, 13 points) to 10 total shots and four on target. Goalkeeper Chris Brady recorded a clean sheet, marking the team’s third this year after conceding 60 goals in 2025, which was among the worst in the East.

The Fire quickly took the lead. After a poor turnover by Nashville, Jonathan Bamba had a shooting opportunity but opted for a cross. Zinckernagel simply tapped it in past goalkeeper Brian Schwake, just 15 seconds into the match.

Chicago relied on Brady in the closing minutes, where he made two vital saves. He denied Jeissen Palacios’ header in the 90th minute and stopped a header from Warren Madrigal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Nashville pressed hard during the eight minutes of stoppage time but failed to equalize, suffering their first loss in 10 matches across all competitions this year.

Nashville had a significant possession advantage, 58.3% to 41.7%, but only created opportunities late in the game. The Fire executed effective counter-attacks, beginning with Zinckernagel’s goal and continuing throughout the first half.

Chicago also helped Brady with 16 clearances, effectively neutralizing Nashville’s attacking trio of Sam Surridge, Hany Mukhtar, and Cristian Espinoza, with only one shot on target from Surridge and Mukhtar each.

Bamba played a key role for the Fire, contributing three shots along with his assist. Zinckernagel added four shots, two of which were on target. No other Chicago player managed a shot on goal.
