Manchester City‘s loss to Manchester United has set them back in the title race. With Arsenal also sharing points with Nottingham Forest, City now trails the Gunners by seven points after 22 matches.

This gap isn’t impossible to bridge, but City’s current form raises concerns. In the match against United, City dominated possession at nearly 70%, yet they were fortunate not to lose by a larger margin under Michael Carrick’s management.

Manchester City Loss Against Manchester United Showed Players Struggled

It was clear before the game that United would defend in deep and look for counter-attacks, which they executed effectively against City. However, City’s main issue was their failure to penetrate United’s defense. Despite having only 28% possession and just one corner, United launched quick counter-attacks with key contributions from Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo, Patrick Dorgu, and Bryan Mbeumo, leading to City’s defeat.

City’s defense was weakened due to injuries to Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, limiting full-backs’ ability to support wingers. Whenever the full-backs moved forward, United quickly countered.

Among City players, only Jeremy Doku, Rodri, Rayan Cherki, and Gianluigi Donnaruma displayed the necessary drive to win. Senior players like Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden had poor performances, with Foden substituted at half-time. Erling Haaland managed only one shot on target, blocked by Lisandro Martinez, and hasn’t scored from open play in the last seven league matches.

This raises questions about whether City’s players and manager still have the motivation to chase another title. Having won six Premier League titles in eight years, there may be complacency in the team.

Is Pep Guardiola’s Time at Manchester City Ending?

If City ends another season without a trophy, it will be their second consecutive season without one, prompting speculation about Guardiola’s future. The high expectations at City mean even a successful manager like Guardiola faces scrutiny. A second trophyless season could make him reconsider his position at the club.

While City’s defense was short-handed, Nico O’Reilly and Rico Lewis struggled against Amad Diallo and Patrick Dorgu. Despite having the ball more, City found it hard to challenge Senne Lammens. Antoine Semenyo was mostly ineffective, and the lack of effort from Bernardo and Foden contributed to the defeat.

City has gathered only three points from their last four matches, which has favored Arsenal. Although Arsenal dropped points against Nottingham Forest, City’s loss reduced the pressure on them. It’s now up to Guardiola’s squad to step up and prove their commitment.
