Cristiano Ronaldo and Al Nassr could reach AFC Champions League following unprecedented ruling

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr remained in contention for an AFC Champions League spot after a controversial Sports Arbitration ruling.

Al Nassr‘s campaign was falling far short of expectations, especially considering the continued presence of Cristiano Ronaldo and the high-profile signing of Jhon Durán, who arrived in peak form. The season had been disappointing, with AFC Champions League qualification looking nearly impossible. However, a last-minute decision by the Sports Arbitration Center has thrown the team a lifeline and could dramatically shift the narrative.

Al Nassr was recently awarded three crucial points following a successful appeal to the Sports Arbitration Center. The club argued that Al Orobah’s substitute goalkeeper, Rafi Al Ruwaili, was ineligible to play in their 2-1 loss during Matchday 23. At the time, Al Ruwaili was still officially employed as a police officer, a detail that disqualified him under league registration rules.

What makes the situation even more remarkable is that the case had initially been closed due to a lack of evidence. However, Al Nassr pushed for a review, and the case was reopened. On review, the ruling was overturned, and Al Nassr was awarded the win. This decision brings their total to 70 points—just two behind Al Hilal, who currently hold the final AFC Champions League Elite spot. Meanwhile, Al Qadsiah drops to fourth place with 68 points, making Monday’s fixtures absolutely critical.

The decision also adds incentive for Cristiano Ronaldo to remain with the club amid rumors of potential transfers related to his desire to compete in the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Ronaldo, known for his relentless drive to win top soccer competitions, now sees a renewed chance to do just that with Al Nassr.

What needs to happen for Al Nassr to qualify?

Al Hilal controls their own destiny. A win at home against Michel’s Al Qadsiah would secure their place in the Champions League, joining league champions Al Ittihad and 2025 AFC Champions League winners Al Ahli. But it won’t be easy—Al Qadsiah are also fighting for a spot in the AFC 2 (akin to the Europa League) and will play the King’s Cup final against Al Ittihad on May 31.

Cristiano Ronaldo remains hopeful. Al Nassr holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Al Hilal, meaning a win against 12th-placed Al Fateh, combined with a draw or loss by Al Hilal, would see Al Nassr snatch the final spot. It’s a long shot, but one Ronaldo is determined to chase.

FIFA president hints at Ronaldo’s involvement

Speculation continues to grow regarding Ronaldo’s potential participation in the expanded Club World Cup. With top players and clubs vying for entry, the prospect of seeing the Portuguese star on that stage is intriguing.

In a recent livestream with internet personality IShowSpeed, FIFA president Gianni Infantino added fuel to the rumors. “And Ronaldo might play for one of the teams at the Club World Cup,” Infantino said. A surprised Speed replied, “Really?” to which Infantino responded, “Yeah, Cristiano Ronaldo might play at a Club World Cup. These are discussions with some clubs.”

Infantino further noted that time remains for clubs to make moves. So if any club is watching and is interested in hiring Ronaldo for a Club World Cup… who knows? There’s still some time. It would be fun,” he added. Whether it’s in the AFC Champions League or a global tournament, Ronaldo’s next step continues to draw global attention.
