Cristiano Ronaldo clarifies his future with Al Nassr and Club World Cup participation

Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo addressed his future with Al Nassr, hinted at Club World Cup decision.

Cristiano Ronaldo once again proved his staying power on Sunday, helping Portugal lift the 2025 UEFA Nations League trophy with a clutch performance against Spain. The 39-year-old forward scored the game-tying goal in regulation, setting the stage for a penalty shootout victory. His display reaffirmed that he remains capable of competing at the highest level, including the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. After the match, Ronaldo addressed his future—and made his plans with Al Nassr crystal clear.

The Portuguese captain confirmed that he will stay with Al Nassr, putting to rest weeks of speculation. With his current contract set to expire on June 30, several Club World Cup teams reportedly showed interest. But when asked about what’s next, Ronaldo responded simply: “Future? Nothing will change. Al Nassr? Yes.” His remarks came just moments after securing yet another international title.

Last month, Al Nassr sporting director Fernando Hierro revealed that the club was already in talks with Ronaldo regarding a contract extension. However, he acknowledged the fierce competition from other clubs aiming to lure one of the game’s greatest players for one final elite tournament run.

The speculation had only grown louder after Ronaldo posted a cryptic message on his social media: “This chapter is over. The story? Still being written.” Many interpreted the message as a farewell to Al Nassr. In reality, it marked the close of the season—nothing more. As it turns out, Ronaldo plans to keep writing his story in Riyadh.

A look back at Ronaldo’s Al Nassr tenure

Since joining Al Nassr in December 2022 following his departure from Manchester United, Ronaldo has made a significant impact in the Saudi Pro League. He finished as the league’s top scorer for a second consecutive season, netting 25 goals this year. Still, the club fell short of expectations, finishing third in the league and missing out on a place in next season’s AFC Champions League.

Despite 99 goals in 105 appearances for Al Nassr, Ronaldo has only one major trophy to show for it: the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup. While that lack of silverware might sting, lifting the UEFA Nations League with Portugal has likely overshadowed any club-level frustrations for the veteran striker.

Al Nassr moving toward a new deal

Rumors of Ronaldo’s departure circulated for weeks, but they were always met with a need for official confirmation. That clarity finally came from inside the club. Speaking publicly, Al Nassr executive Fernando Hierro addressed the noise and reaffirmed the soccer club’s intent to retain the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“Ronaldo’s contract with Al Nassr runs through the end of June,” said Hierro. We are working on renewing his contract so he can continue with us. Many clubs are interested in signing him, but we’re negotiating with Cristiano. God willing, we’ll find a solution.” It’s now clear that Al Nassr’s efforts have paid off—and Ronaldo isn’t finished yet.
