Portugal and Spain will face off this Sunday in the 2025 UEFA Nations League final, and Cristiano Ronaldo has shared a heartfelt message ahead of the match.

After defeating Germany 2–1 in the semifinals of the 2025 UEFA Nations League, Portugal earned their spot in the championship match, where they will take on Spain this Sunday. Ahead of the clash, Cristiano Ronaldo posted an inspiring message.

“It’s for us. It’s for you. It’s for Portugal. Tomorrow is a day to make history again,” wrote CR7 on his official Instagram and X (formerly known as Twitter) accounts Saturday afternoon. Ronaldo seeks his third title with Portugal

In his message, Ronaldo speaks of “making history again.” That refers to his involvement in the landmark moments that have brought Portugal unprecedented success in recent years. Before Cristiano’s debut with the national team in 2003, they had never even reached the final of a major tournament.

That changed dramatically. They reached their first final at Euro 2004, losing the title at home to Greece. But years later, CR7 got his redemption, leading the team to glory at Euro 2016 against France. In 2019, they secured their second title by beating the Netherlands in the final of the inaugural UEFA Nations League.

How has Ronaldo performed against Spain?

Sunday’s final will be Cristiano Ronaldo’s 10th match for Portugal against Spain. The record hasn’t been particularly favorable for the forward, who has only two wins, four draws, and three losses against them. Two of those games were knockout-stage encounters, both of which saw Spain advance.

The most significant of those came at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, when they met in the Round of 16 and Portugal were eliminated after a 1–0 loss thanks to a goal from David Villa. The other World Cup meeting came in the group stage in 2018, which ended in a 3–3 draw with a hat-trick from Cristiano.

At the Euro, they met twice: a 1–0 group stage win for Portugal in 2004 and a 0–0 draw in the 2012 semifinals, which Spain won on penalties. In the UEFA Nations League, they faced off twice in 2022, ending in a draw and a win for Spain in the group stage. The remaining three meetings between Ronaldo and Spain were friendlies. The forward has only scored in one of those nine matches.
