Cristiano Ronaldo has paid tribute to Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who also play professionally, who tragically passed away in a car accident that took place in the early hours of Thursday morning in Spain. The Portuguese captain said that the loss, “doesn’t make any sense.” 

It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together on the national team, and you had just gotten married, he wrote in a heartfelt post on Instagram. “To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.” 

According to The Athletic, the fatal incident was reported by local police to have happened on the A-52 motorway, a 400km route connecting Madrid to Galicia, Portugal. The accident took place in Zamora province in northwestern Spain early Thursday morning.

Authorities confirmed to the paper that the car, occupied by 28-year-old Jota and his 25-year-old brother Silva, veered off the road and collided, igniting upon impact. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.

Jota had recently celebrated his marriage to Rute Cardoso in Porto, located about 300km west of Zamora. The couple shared three children. The sudden loss of the brothers has left their family and the broader football community in mourning.

Liverpool, players and other sports figures offer condolences 

Liverpool expressed their devastation at the “unimaginable loss” of Diogo Jota, as tributes poured in from his former clubs—Wolverhampton Wanderers, Porto, Atlético Madrid, Paços de Ferreira, and Gondomar. 

Meanwhile, many teammates and players, including Darwin Nunez, Stefan Bajcetic, Ruben Neves, Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Jamie Carragher, and Steven Gerrard, have also offered condolences on social media. 

The global football community mourned alongside them, with messages from the Premier League, the FA, PFA, UEFA, and numerous clubs, including Everton and Manchester United. Beyond football, Rafael Nadal and LeBron James paid tribute, while UEFA held moments of silence at Women’s Euro matches.
