D.C. United has acquired All-Star striker Tai Baribo from the Philadelphia Union for up to $4.6 million.
Philadelphia will receive $4 million guaranteed, with the potential for an additional $600,000 based on performance incentives for the 27-year-old Israeli international.
Baribo has signed a five-year contract with D.C. United as a designated player, which will last until the end of the 2029-30 MLS season.
“We are very pleased to bring in a player like Tai to strengthen our roster for the 2026 MLS season,” said Dr. Erkut Sogut, managing director of soccer operations at D.C. “Tai is a skilled finisher and a proven scorer who will enhance our attacking play.”
“He is also great at creating space and is effective in aerial situations, aligning perfectly with the vision we have for our club. We are excited to have him join us in Washington.”
Baribo led Philadelphia with 19 goals in all competitions in 2025 and was instrumental in the Union’s Supporters’ Shield victory.
Since transferring from Austrian team Wolfsberger AC in August 2023, he has scored 35 goals and provided six assists in 67 matches.
“We thank Tai for his contributions to the club. He is a true professional who gave his all during his time here,” said Union head coach Bradley Carnell.
“We believe this decision benefits both the club and the player. It opens financial opportunities for team improvements while making room for our emerging talents. We wish Tai and his family success in the next phase of his career.”
Baribo joins D.C. United following the decision to decline the option for 2024 MLS Golden Boot winner Christian Benteke. The team struggled last season, finishing last in the league with only 30 goals and 26 points (5-18-11) in 2025.
