D.C. United has signed goalkeeper Sean Johnson, who has played over 400 MLS matches.

The contract, announced on Tuesday, will last until June 2027.

Johnson, 36, won the 2021 MLS Cup with New York City FC and has played the last three seasons with Toronto FC.

“His international experience with the U.S. men’s national team and his leadership will enhance our team,” said Dr. Erkut Sogut, managing director of soccer operations. “Sean is a proven winner, and we are excited to have him in the Black-and-Red family.”

In 2025, Johnson had seven clean sheets in 31 games for Toronto. He has 109 shutouts over 431 career starts with the Chicago Fire (2010-16), NYCFC (2017-22), and Toronto. He was the MVP of the 2021 MLS Cup and named an MLS All-Star in 2022.

Johnson has 13 caps with the U.S. Men’s National Team from 2011 to 2023 and was part of the squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
