“Seeing an empty spot every day is tough”: Maresca on Jota’s tragedy
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has commended the bravery and strength of Liverpool’s players, who continue to perform well despite the tragic death of Diogo Jota.
Details: Maresca, who faced a similar tragedy during his playing days when his Sevilla teammate Antonio Puerta passed away shortly after a match in 2007, expressed his respect for how Liverpool has managed their loss.
“Playing against them isn’t any easier now just because they dropped points. They remain a very strong team. Their performance this season is impressive, especially after the tragedy with Jota,” Maresca commented.
Advertisement“I experienced something similar 20 years ago. It’s incredibly tough—for the players, the club, and the coach. Every day at training, you see an empty spot. You need to be strong to move on.”
The Portuguese forward passed away in a car accident in July, just weeks after helping his team win the Premier League title.
Maresca highlighted that Liverpool’s emotional resilience adds to the respect their performances deserve.
Liverpool will play against Chelsea away this weekend, looking to recover after their loss to Crystal Palace.
Reminder: Maresca has announced that Cole Palmer will not play in the upcoming match.
