Dario Benedetto, who played for Olympique de Marseille from 2019 to 2022 and spent some time on loan at Elche, is currently without a club after leaving Newell’s Old Boys. Now 35 years old, the forward revealed to ESPN that he considered retiring. “I almost hung up my boots. I’ve had enough of the bad habits that football has today. The problems, the schemes… But I will always love this sport, I am grateful for it, and I intended to leave on good terms,” he said.
Benedetto also criticized his last club, stating, “It’s a real shame. I was surprised that an interim coach (Lucas Bernardi) said he wouldn’t consider me when he was only there for three matches. I felt good. I told him: ‘Don’t worry, I will sort this out with the president, and you won’t have any problems.’ Additionally, he mentioned advice from Gonzalo Higuain to consult a sports psychologist. “I have been in therapy for seven years. I think all footballers should do the same. I started in France because I struggled to adapt to life there, the language—not the football,” he explained. His time at Marseille seems to have been a significant turning point for him.
