Darren Fletcher defends Shea Lacey over red card

Darren Fletcher criticized the officiating, describing the red card decision as harsh. He pointed out several fouls against his team that went unpunished during the match.

In a conversation with TNT Sports after the match, Fletcher defended Lacey. He spoke positively about the young player’s attitude and expressed confidence that Lacey would learn from this experience.

“Shea Lacey’s yellow card is unfair when compared to the fouls we faced all game. He made a mistake which led to the red card, and I think it shows poor refereeing,” Fletcher stated.

“He’s upset because he cares. He understands what happened and will learn from it. There’s no question about his talent. Today was a tough lesson, but we believe in Shea,” he added.

“He’s one of our most promising young players, and at Old Trafford, he will have the chance to make up for this in the future.”

The defeat means Manchester United is out of the FA Cup, likely ending their hopes for silverware this season.

“We started well, but the goal took the wind out of us,” he said. “When we got back to 2–1, I felt the energy shift, but we couldn’t secure the win.”

With the club set to appoint a new interim manager soon, Fletcher emphasized the need for a quick response from the squad.

“Confidence is crucial in football. When it’s lacking, players need to dig deep to regain it. It’s now up to them; they need to fight for what’s left this season,” he noted.

Lacey’s red card means he will miss the next match, but Fletcher’s support indicates the winger remains part of the club’s future plans.
