Darren Fletcher Consulted Alex Ferguson Before Taking Manchester United Role
Before accepting his new job, Darren Fletcher contacted Sir Alex Ferguson, whose opinion is highly valued at Old Trafford.
In an interview with BBC Sport, Fletcher shared that he sought Ferguson’s guidance before taking the interim position. Ferguson had attended a recent match that ended in a 1-1 draw at Leeds, and his support gave Fletcher the confidence to move forward.
“I prefer to discuss big decisions with Sir Alex. I wanted his approval,” Fletcher stated.
“He deserves that respect, and I wanted to hear his thoughts.”
Fletcher mentioned that Ferguson’s advice solidified his commitment to the club and served as both reassurance and inspiration.
As interim manager, Fletcher aims to lead a transitioning squad while honoring his mentor’s legacy.
From Ferguson’s Student to Leader at Old Trafford
Fletcher spent 13 years under Ferguson’s guidance, making 342 appearances and winning 13 major titles, including five Premier League championships and the 2008 Champions League.
His connection to Manchester United is stronger than ever; both of his twin sons, Jack and Tyler, are part of the club’s academy.
The 41-year-old has held various roles at United, including youth coach and technical director, before stepping into the first-team role.
Fletcher acknowledged that he hasn’t had much time to connect with all the players since his appointment, although he has met with captain Bruno Fernandes and new signings Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.
As he readies for his first match against Burnley, Fletcher’s career has come full circle. Once a young player guided by Ferguson, he now takes on the challenge of managing the team and revitalizing the essence of Manchester United.
