Brazilian media has reported that a family court in Porto Alegre has ordered the arrest of Douglas Costa due to unpaid child support totaling 493,000 reais, approximately 93,000 dollars. The court’s decision allows for a 30-day detention that could be enforced at any time over the next two years.
This legal issue traces back to 2023, during his time with the Los Angeles Galaxy. If arrested, Costa will have three days to either clear the owed amount with the judge, show proof of his attempts to pay, or demonstrate that he cannot afford to make the payments.
His professional career has also faced challenges. Sydney FC announced the mutual termination of his contract, referencing “ongoing legal and personal matters.” The club had given him two months to address these issues, but Costa indicated he did not have a solution and could not rejoin the team.
Costa began his career at Gremio in 2007 and found success at Shakhtar Donetsk, where he won 11 domestic trophies. He then played for Bayern Munich, winning the Bundesliga and the FIFA Club World Cup, and Juventus, where he became an important player after an initial loan. He represented Brazil in the 2018 World Cup but missed the 2019 Copa América. After returning to Gremio, he played for LA Galaxy, followed by short stints at Fluminense and Sydney FC. Now 34, he is a free agent, facing an uncertain future due to his legal issues.
