Eagles’ World Cup Aspirations Look Bright, But Challenges Ahead

Former goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim believes Nigeria’s route to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is looking better after key results in the qualifiers. The Super Eagles recently won 2-1 against Lesotho, while South Africa surprisingly drew 0-0 with Zimbabwe on the same day.

Agbim, who was part of the 2014 World Cup team, told Completesports.com these results have boosted the team’s morale. “Currently, it seems the path is clearer for the Super Eagles,” he said. “The victory against Lesotho and South Africa’s draw against Zimbabwe have opened up the group. The Super Eagles now control their own fate, so they need to give it their all against Benin Republic on Tuesday in Uyo.”

A Fight for the Top Spot

Despite the optimism, Agbim warned that the match against Benin Republic’s ‘Squirrels’ will be challenging.

“No one expected South Africa to struggle so much against Zimbabwe at home. That shows that this final qualifier will be tough,” Agbim noted. He emphasized the need for the Super Eagles to be ready for a crucial match, as both teams are vying for the single qualification spot.

Benin has the advantage of being coached by former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr, who knows the Super Eagles players well. Agbim remained hopeful, saying, “I believe Nigeria has what it takes to secure a win and achieve their seventh World Cup appearance.”

The Qualification Scenario

Nigeria must win against Benin in Uyo for direct qualification. A victory would bring them to 17 points, equal with Benin, making goal difference and head-to-head records important. Benin currently has a better goal difference (+5 compared to Nigeria’s +3) and won their previous match 2-1. Therefore, Nigeria needs to win by at least two goals (e.g., 2-0 or 3-1) to gain a favorable head-to-head record.

However, even a significant win may not suffice if South Africa beats Rwanda. The best outcome for Nigeria is to win by at least two goals against Benin while ensuring South Africa either draws or loses to Rwanda.
