In the past 21 months, Manchester United has focused more on recruiting players from South America, with INEOS eager to secure young talent early.

This strategy was evident with the signing of Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno, who will officially join the team in summer 2025 after being signed in winter.

Additionally, United has brought in Colombian teenager Cristian Orozco, another academy prospect expected to arrive in 2026.

These signings indicate that United aims to grab young players before larger clubs drive up their prices. It also highlights their commitment to a long-term recruitment strategy alongside immediate player acquisitions.

Currently, United’s focus has reportedly turned to Ecuador, with midfielder Ederson Castillo from LDU Quito attracting their attention.

Ecuadorian outlet Futbol Ecuador states that United has started direct discussions with LDU Quito regarding a potential transfer.

This communication does not guarantee a bid, but it indicates progress beyond initial scouting.

LDU Quito has informed United of their asking price for Castillo, setting it at £5.6 million (€6.4 million, $7 million).

Importantly, reports suggest this fee has not deterred United, as discussions are still ongoing, implying the price is negotiable.

The 17-year-old defensive midfielder has made five appearances for Quito, averaging 28 minutes per game.

Despite limited playtime, Castillo has already contributed by assisting a goal in a 4-2 defeat against Universidad Catolica in September.

LDU Quito values the young player highly, referring to him as a “crown jewel” they wish to protect.

However, as they have set a price for him, it indicates they are open to his departure, with United actively pursuing his signature.
