Edson Álvarez faced a tough start in Turkey, receiving significant criticism from Fenerbahce supporters despite the team’s 3-1 win against Gençlerbirliği, as reported by Mediotiempo. The Mexican midfielder, on loan from West Ham United, played the entire match but did not impress fans, who expressed their discontent on social media.
Head coach Zeki Murat Göle, who recently took over from José Mourinho after the club’s exit from the Champions League, immediately placed Álvarez in the starting lineup. However, many fans compared him unfavorably to Sofyan Amrabat, the Moroccan midfielder who moved to Real Betis.
One fan commented, “Based on 75 minutes, Edson Álvarez is not good,” while others called for refunds on his transfer and stated, “Amrabat is better.” Another fan noted that Álvarez was “just chasing rebounds without much effort.”
Despite the negative feedback, Álvarez is part of a renewed team aiming to challenge Galatasaray’s dominance and compete in the Europa League. The club has also signed notable players such as Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson and Spanish forward Marco Asensio, with hopes of regaining its status at the top of Turkish football.
