Chelsea had a strong run recently, beating Barcelona 3-0 in the Champions League and drawing 1-1 with Arsenal at home. However, after that draw, their form dipped, although they secured a 3-1 away win against Cardiff in the Carabao Cup quarter-final, marking their second consecutive victory under coach Enzo Maresca. Following the match against Cardiff, Maresca addressed the media, discussing the team’s performance and the absence of Estevao from the match-day squad.
Commenting on the win and the team’s improved second-half performance, Maresca stated:
“These are the games that make me appreciate the players even more. It can be easy to lose focus in tricky matches like this. Cardiff are very organized and intense. We knew it would be challenging, especially since Ty, Guiu, and Facu haven’t been playing frequently.”
“They need more physical conditioning and game time. We did well defensively in the second half, but creating chances was a struggle.”
Estevao has gained popularity among Chelsea supporters for his skills and goal-scoring ability. He was absent from the squad against Cardiff, and Maresca shared the reason:
“He has a small muscle issue and won’t be available for the Newcastle match. We’ll assess his situation for the next one.”
After the game against Everton, Maresca described the lead-up as his “worst 48 hours” at the club, sparking speculation about his future. However, following the win against Cardiff, he appeared more upbeat:
“I’ve been happy since day one. It’s not that I’m unhappy tonight. I am happy, thank you.”
“As I mentioned earlier, I began preparing for Cardiff right after the Everton match. I haven’t spoken with anyone,” Maresca replied when asked if he had talked to the Sporting Directors.
