The 11th round of Ligue 1 ended on a sad note as Lyon faced Brest, resulting in a 0-0 draw. This outcome was somewhat favorable for Lyon, especially after they played with ten men from the 8th minute due to Hans Hateboer’s red card in his first start. However, for neutral fans, the match was lackluster and unlikely to be remembered.
“We need to be solid for 90 minutes. There are positives to take from this. We were down a man from the 7th minute (8th, editor’s note), so earning a point is a positive outcome. We had to change our game plan, but it worked,” said goalkeeper Dominik Grief after the match, speaking to Ligue 1+. Lyon made no secret of their intent to secure a draw. “We can be satisfied with this point,” added Rachid Ghezzal in front of the match broadcasters.
On the Brest side, the draw is viewed as a disappointing result. Despite the outcome, most teams at the bottom of the table also lost, except for Metz. Stade Brestois has not won in five matches and last tasted victory in September. Coach Eric Roy was visibly frustrated at the final whistle, particularly targeting Jorge Maciel, Paulo Fonseca’s assistant. “I’ve experienced this before under him at Lille, where he threw balls onto the pitch to slow down the game when we were counter-attacking or trying to get back in the match,” he expressed bitterly.
Roy also criticized Corentin Tolisso, showing his frustration. “I hope Tolisso is okay; he spent at least ten minutes on the ground during the match. I sincerely hope he’s fine as he needs to play again in four and seven days. It’s not for lack of trying to get one of our players sent off. As you mentioned, it’s all about experience. Big teams do tend to slow the game down, as you aptly pointed out. We could use a bit of that cunning ourselves,” he noted, commenting on both Tolisso’s actions and Lyon’s overall approach.
