Jarrad Branthwaite stated that Everton is focused on securing a spot in Europe after their away victory against Newcastle United on Saturday.
The centre-back scored the first goal in the 19th minute, heading in from a corner at the near post.
Both teams exchanged goals in a competitive match until substitute Thierno Barry netted the decisive goal late in the game.
“It’s a massive win,” Branthwaite said after the match. “We knew it would be tough coming here, but we needed a result. We really fought hard, especially after conceding.”
Discussing his goal from a set piece, he added, “It’s something we’ve been practicing, so it’s great that it worked out. The manager has been pushing us to score more from set pieces, and I’m glad I could contribute.”
Jordan Pickford played a key role in securing the win with a fantastic save in stoppage time, deflecting Sandro Tonali’s shot onto the bar.
“That’s the best save I’ve ever seen; I’m not sure how he did it,” Branthwaite remarked. “He’s an exceptional goalkeeper, and when he pulls off saves like that, it’s magic. He kept us in it at a crucial time.”
This marked Everton’s seventh away win this season, highlighting their strong performance on the road. They have accumulated 24 points away from home, which is second only to Arsenal.
“Our away game has been a significant part of our success this season. We need to improve our home form to climb higher in the table, so we must keep this momentum going,” he said.
Everton targeting European qualification after crucial win against Newcastle
Everton has risen to eighth place in the Premier League standings, just three points behind Brentford. Finishing seventh could offer a chance to qualify for the UEFA Conference League this year.
“That’s our goal,” Branthwaite said. “We want to be in Europe, and we have to keep earning points. Why not aim high?”
