Ex-Manchester United Player Set to Depart Marseille in January

Manchester United has a history of nurturing talented midfielders, and one such player started his journey at a very young age.

Joining United’s academy from Reading FC at just six years old, he quickly rose through the ranks and became a notable prospect at Carrington.

His debut in the Premier League came in May 2017, making him the youngest player to represent Manchester United, at 16 years and 263 days, under José Mourinho.

Despite his potential, he faced limited opportunities, making only 10 senior appearances for United without scoring, as competition for midfield positions and tactical requirements hindered his regular playtime.

In 2020, with his contract ending and playing time uncertain, he decided to leave Old Trafford for Lille OSC on a free transfer, looking for more game time and a clear path for development.

This choice proved significant, as he gradually made a name for himself in Ligue 1, becoming an essential part of the midfield and earning his first senior caps for England while with Lille.

After his Lille contract ended, he became one of the sought-after free agents, leading to his transfer to Olympique de Marseille in the summer of 2024.

Marseille didn’t sign him as a future prospect but as a player in his prime, capable of playing as a No.8 or No.10, helping to maintain control in midfield.

Since joining Stade Vélodrome, Gomes has been a regular player in Ligue 1, although his role has varied. He has had some standout performances, but also faces rotation in midfield and limited chances in European matches.

His displays of creativity and composure have kept him in discussions about his future, although clarity on his role remains uncertain.

Life at Stade Vélodrome has proven to be more complex than expected.

Adjusting to Roberto De Zerbi’s structured play style and the physical demands of Marseille’s midfield has been a gradual process, and Gomes has not yet become a consistent starter.

He has yet to start a UEFA Champions League game. Recently, De Zerbi has opted for the experience of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Matt O’Riley in the midfield.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching and competition for places in the England team intensifying, there are reports that Gomes and his representatives may reevaluate his situation in January if his role continues to be limited.

Gomes has openly expressed his ambitions, saying: “I’d rather be called up by England. Representing the Three Lions remains a big goal for me.”
