Bruno Fernandes has discussed how Ruben Amorim influenced his decision to stay at Manchester United, despite interest from the Saudi Pro League last summer.
Al-Hilal made a strong attempt to sign Fernandes and were reportedly ready to pay around £100 million for him.
The 31-year-old opted to remain at the club and has been performing well in the Premier League this season, leading the league in assists while only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has had a hand in more goals.
In an interview with Canal 11 last month, Fernandes shared his thoughts on the transfer situation. He mentioned that family considerations were crucial in his decision to stay, but also noted Amorim’s wish to retain him played a part. Fernandes felt that Manchester United would have accepted the significant offer but were hesitant to disregard the manager’s request.
“Manchester United wanted me to leave; that’s clear to me. I believe they lacked the resolve because Ruben Amorim wanted me to stay, but on the club’s side, I sensed that if I left, it wouldn’t be such a big deal,” he stated.
“Cristiano offered me advice, but ultimately, the decision was mine. I chose to stay because I truly love the club, but loyalty doesn’t hold the same value as it used to…”
“I felt the conversation with the manager influenced my decision to stay. However, from the club’s perspective, it felt like, ‘If you leave, it’s not a big deal for us.’ That hurt a little. More than anything, it saddened me because I’m a player who gives my all, whether the performance is good or bad…”
“If one day I have to play in Saudi Arabia, I’ll do it. I told the directors that, but I think they hesitated to make that choice since the manager wanted me here. If I had expressed a desire to leave, they would have let me go.”
