Chelsea and PSG will face each other in the FIFA Club World Cup final in the United States this evening.
The two top European clubs will compete for the title of world champions at MetLife Stadium.
As they prepare for their first match since 2016, here are five notable players who have played for both teams during their careers.
Five Players Who Played for Both Chelsea and PSG
Claude Makelele
Makelele, known for his exceptional midfield skills, was signed by Chelsea in 2003 as one of the first key players following Roman Abramovich’s takeover. Before this, he played an important role at Real Madrid, despite being overlooked by many.
At Chelsea, he significantly impacted the team’s success, contributing to their back-to-back Premier League titles under manager Jose Mourinho.
During his five seasons with Chelsea, Makelele secured six trophies before moving to Paris Saint-Germain, where he helped win the Coupe de France in the 2009/10 season.
Nicolas Anelka
Nicolas Anelka left PSG for Arsenal after just 12 appearances at the age of 17. He quickly found success in England, helping Arsenal win a domestic double and later receiving the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
After a stint with Real Madrid, Anelka returned to PSG for £22 million but faced challenges, leading to his departure. He had various career moves before joining Chelsea for £15 million in 2008.
At Chelsea, Anelka had a fruitful run, scoring 59 goals in 184 appearances, winning the Premier League Golden Boot in 2008/09 and securing a league and cup double the following season.
Alex
The Brazilian defender Alex was known for his strong presence on the field. He joined Chelsea from Santos in 2004 but initially spent three years on loan at PSV Eindhoven. After joining Chelsea, he won a Premier League and FA Cup double in the 2009/10 season, becoming famous for his powerful free-kicks.
David Luiz
David Luiz had a notable journey between Chelsea and PSG. He first signed with Chelsea in January 2011 and won the Champions League, FA Cup, and Europa League during his time there.
PSG made him the world’s most expensive defender with a £50 million transfer. During his two years in Paris, he won multiple domestic titles before returning to Chelsea for £30 million in 2016. Luiz played a crucial role in Chelsea’s title win under Antonio Conte and made 248 appearances for the club across both stints.
Thiago Silva
Thiago Silva was a key signing for PSG, joining from AC Milan and greatly contributing to the club’s dominance in French football. Over eight seasons, he won seven Ligue 1 titles and 16 domestic cups and earned a place in the Team of the Year numerous times.
At 35, Silva moved to Chelsea on a free transfer, continuing to perform well in the Premier League. In his first season, he helped Chelsea win the Champions League, adding to his impressive collection of trophies.
