Former Barcelona star Arturo Vidal makes his stance clear in the Messi vs. Ronaldo debate

Former Barcelona midfielder Arturo Vidal made his opinion clear on the long-running debate between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, following the Portuguese star’s comments proclaiming himself the best player in the world.

The rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, which captivated fans during their time at Real Madrid and Barcelona, continues to spark debate over who is the greatest of all time. Arturo Vidal, however, has no hesitation in picking his favorite.

During a Twitch livestream, the former Juventus and Barcelona midfielder was asked about Ronaldo’s bold statements. True to his candid style, Vidal didn’t hold back in his response.

He’s crazier than a…,” Vidal quipped, leaving his comment open-ended but clearly critical. He elaborated, saying of Ronaldo, “he knows he’s not [the best], he knows it,” but added, “he believes in himself, and that’s what’s important,” acknowledging the Portuguese star’s confidence.

As for who Vidal considers the greatest player in history, he didn’t hesitate to choose Lionel Messi, his former Barcelona teammate. “The best of all, clearly, is Leo. He’s from another planet,” Vidal remarked.

This isn’t the first time Vidal has expressed his admiration for Messi. Back in 2018, during an interview with Barcelona’s official channel, Vidal described Messi as “the best in history, for who he is and what he does”. He also shared his gratitude for the opportunity to share a locker room with the Argentine legend and other top players at the club.

Arturo Vidal’s tenure at Barcelona with Lionel Messi

Vidal joined Barcelona in mid-2018 after a successful stint with Bayern Munich. He spent two seasons with the Spanish giants before departing in 2020 to join Inter Milan.

During his time at Camp Nou, the Chilean midfielder made 96 appearances, scoring 11 goals and providing 11 assists. He also received 17 yellow cards, was sent off once, and helped the club secure two domestic titles.

Ronaldo’s controversial comments spark debate

Ronaldo’s self-assessment came during a conversation with journalist Edu Aguirre, where the Al-Nassr star detailed the qualities that, in his view, make him the “most complete player ever”.

I do everything in soccer—header, free kicks, left foot, right foot, I’m fast, I’m strong, I jump… People can have their preferences, like Messi, Pelé, or Maradona. I respect that, but saying Cristiano isn’t complete is a lie. I’m the most complete,” Ronaldo asserted.

When asked if he considers himself the greatest player of all time, Ronaldo gave a characteristically confident response: “I think so, honestly. I haven’t seen anyone better than me, and I say that from the heart”.

The former Real Madrid forward also expressed frustration with what he sees as a lack of appreciation for his current performances, despite continuing to score goals at a high level.

“People are too focused on the thousand goals,” he said. “I know I’m partly to blame for that, but it feels like they’re undervaluing what I’m doing now. For example, this year, I’m scoring a lot of goals—beautiful goals—and people aren’t recognizing the moment I’m having”.
