Former England players Jermaine Jenas and Chris Waddle have endorsed Adam Wharton for a significant role in next summer’s World Cup.
This season, Wharton has made a mark at Crystal Palace, ranking sixth in the Premier League for expected assists.
The 21-year-old has earned three caps for England after his unexpected selection in the Euro 2024 squad. Both Jenas and Waddle believe he could play a key part at this summer’s World Cup.
Currently, Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson appears to hold a midfield spot, but Wharton is seen as a strong contender to partner Declan Rice. Jenas and Waddle expressed their belief that Wharton has an edge over Anderson.
“I like balance in midfield, and I think Elliot Anderson is a great player. He’s done well at Forest and passed his test with England,” Jenas, a former England player, stated.

“However, Adam Wharton brings a different level of control and balance to the left side.
“When England plays in the US during hot weather, ball retention will be crucial for success in the tournament. For that reason, I would choose Wharton.”
Waddle agreed, adding that Wharton would provide England with better defensive support, enhancing Rice’s performance.
“Anderson has more freedom to move around the pitch. I’m not saying he has more energy, but he tends to push forward more. If I had to choose a partner for Declan Rice, it would be Wharton.
“Rice has improved since being allowed to go forward. He now plays a more versatile role, scoring goals and making runs. Wharton can focus on staying back and distributing the ball, which is a role Rice used to play.
“When playing with three midfielders and one as a number 10, Rice takes on a quasi-number 10 role. In this scenario, Wharton can act as a protective layer in front of the defense.
“Considering England’s potential defensive issues in the World Cup, having a safeguard in front of the defense is important. Therefore, I would choose Wharton.
“If the coach wants to be more offensive, Anderson is also capable, as he drives forward and creates opportunities. But overall, Wharton has a slight advantage for me.”
