Inter Miami has quickly made its mark in MLS, reaching the playoffs in back-to-back years. This progress is largely thanks to the leadership of Javier Mascherano, who has built on the foundation set by earlier coaches. Recently, a former coach of Lionel Messi is reportedly close to taking on a new role against Miami in the upcoming season.
As per reports by German Garcia and Agustin Malves for TYC Sports, Gerardo Martino has verbally agreed to be the head coach of Los Angeles FC for the next MLS season. However, Tom Bogert mentions that the franchise is still weighing its options, and final decisions have not been made yet.
Gerardo Martino had a significant influence at Inter Miami, starting in July 2023 and serving for 496 days. Under his guidance, the team won its first major titles—the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield—and achieved an impressive 52.24% win rate, setting a club record until Javier Mascherano took over.
Gerardo Martino discusses his exit from Inter Miami
Martino announced his resignation from Inter Miami unexpectedly in November 2024, despite a successful run. He explained his choice by saying, “For strictly personal reasons, I have to leave Miami. We cannot return next year. I need to be in Rosario for personal reasons. I repeat,” according to Diario As.

While Martino’s departure caught many off guard, he mentioned who was first to learn about his decision. “Five or six days after the elimination, I met with Raúl, spoke with Leo, and spoke with Jorge. They were the first to know the news. We were getting along very well until, on Tuesday, I hadn’t yet spoken with the players,” he shared, as reported by Diario As.
Challenges Await Gerardo Martino at LAFC
Los Angeles FC has quickly gained recognition in MLS, winning the championship in just their seventh season under head coach Steve Cherundolo, who became the first coach to win both the Supporters’ Shield and the MLS Cup in his debut year. With such high expectations, Gerardo Martino faces a tough challenge in making a name for himself if he joins the team.
Despite the obstacles, LAFC has a strong roster capable of competing for titles. With top players like Denis Bouanga and Son Heung-min leading the front line, their attacking power shows great promise. If Gerardo Martino comes on board, these key players could drive the team’s goals forward.
