Sir David Beckham’s knighthood marked a significant moment for Manchester United supporters.

After being first suggested for a knighthood in 2011, Beckham finally received the honor this year.

The former United and England captain was officially knighted by King Charles at Windsor Castle in November, following his inclusion in the King’s Birthday Honours earlier that year.

Beckham was recognized for his contributions to sport and charity after a 14-year wait.

This recognition comes at a time when football is gaining more prominence in the UK honours system, acknowledging efforts from both men’s and women’s games.

The women’s side of football has its own connection to United.

According to BBC Sport, Alex Greenwood has been named in the King’s New Year Honours list for 2026.

The former Manchester United Women captain will receive an MBE, joining her Lionesses teammates Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway, and Ella Toone.

For United supporters, Greenwood is a significant figure in the recent revival of the club’s women’s team.

She joined in 2018 and captained the team during its inaugural season under Casey Stoney, leading them to the FA Women’s Championship title and promotion to the Women’s Super League.

This promotion season laid the groundwork for everything United Women have achieved since, with Greenwood’s leadership providing crucial credibility both within the team and in the broader sport.

Greenwood left Old Trafford in August 2019 to join Lyon, with United acknowledging her impactful role as captain during that first season.

She has since returned to the northwest, becoming a key player at Manchester City and a steady presence for England, who are continuing to build on their recent tournament success.
