Franco Mastantuono chooses a Barcelona legend as the world’s best player in his Real Madrid presentation

The new Real Madrid player, Franco Mastantuono, named the greatest player in history during his presentation at the club, and to everyone’s surprise, it was a Barcelona legend.

Real Madrid are coming off a season that fell short of their lofty standards. The Spanish giants want much more, especially given the talent they have on their roster. That desire for improvement has led to key signings in the transfer market and even a change on the bench. Under new head coach Xabi Alonso, the club officially introduced Argentine midfielder Franco Mastantuono, who surprised many by naming a Barcelona legend as the greatest player in history.

During his unveiling, the former River Plate midfielder repeatedly expressed his joy at joining what he called “the biggest club in the world.” But when asked to name the best player of all time, he did not choose any Real Madrid icon.

Before answering, Mastantuono noted that, because of his age, he never had the chance to watch club legend Alfredo Di Stefano in action. Then he delivered his verdict: The best player in the world for me is Messi. I’m Argentine, and I believe in recent years the best player has been him. I have nothing more to add.”

The 17-year-old went on to elaborate on his admiration for the Argentina captain: Messi meant a lot to Barcelona and to the Argentines who watched him play.” His response drew some applause, but also prompted a noticeable silence among the media in attendance.

Mastantuono and the day he shared the pitch with Messi

Mastantuono received his first senior Argentina call-up alongside Lionel Messi during the June World Cup qualifiers. He spent 11 minutes on the field with the legendary forward in a 1-0 win over Chile in Santiago, with both players coming off the bench.

What did Mastantuono say at his presentation?

With his parents visibly emotional in the stands, Mastantuono spoke from the heart about realizing his dream of playing for Madrid. “My dream came true. This is the best club of all time and I am very happy,” he said.

“I promise I will give my all on the pitch for this shirt. With me, you’ll have a Real Madrid fan playing for you on the green grass,” Mastantuono added. “I want to thank my family, my grandparents, my cousins for everything—for being here, for helping me. Also to everyone I know in Argentina. This would not be possible without you.”
