Marcelo Gallardo shared his thoughts after River Plate’s win over Estudiantes in La Plata, which brought his team back to the top of Zone B in the Clausura. He noted, “Today we saw a team with strong mentality and understanding of the game. Before Martínez Quarta’s red card, there was clear superiority,” emphasizing how his team handled challenges.

Gallardo expressed that River’s performance sets the tone for the upcoming important week. “I feel fully represented. This is what we need to face what’s coming,” he said, looking ahead to the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals against Palmeiras.

As he previewed the matchup, the coach anticipated a tough series: “It will be a tight series, not decided in the first leg. They recognize our potential; they know it won’t be easy. If we show the same presence as today, we will be fine.” He commended Abel Ferreira’s team for their physical strength and solid defense.

Reflecting on last year’s semifinal loss, Gallardo highlighted the need to learn from past mistakes. “Competing hard in the Libertadores is the real challenge. Winning or losing depends on many factors,” he said, downplaying the idea that only lifting the trophy matters. “Last year we reached the semifinals, which is not easy. Mistakes can be costly.”

Gallardo also acknowledged Maxi Salas for his intensity and discussed Matías Galarza’s adjustment to the team after Gustavo Alfaro’s comments. “Every player needs time to adapt to River’s world. He is going through that process,” the coach concluded.
