River Plate lost 2-0 to Atlético Tucumán in their domestic league match, but coach Marcelo Gallardo quickly turned his attention to the crucial second leg of the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals against Palmeiras, reports TyC Sports. The team travels to São Paulo knowing they need a win to stay in the tournament.

Gallardo had rested several starting players for the Tucumán game, but the substitutes did not perform well. “This match fell right in between the Palmeiras series and was meant to test players who had seen less action. We didn’t play well as a team or individually. We conceded an early goal again, and it was a disappointing performance overall. It’s hard to find positives in today’s game,” he said.

Looking ahead to the match at Allianz Parque, Gallardo highlighted the need for a strong mindset. “The key is to prepare mentally for a match that is still open. We must go to Brazil to win—there’s no other choice,” he stated.

The coach expressed his confidence in his players. “Those who are fresh will have the opportunity to change the outcome. We will approach it decisively, as we need to. We believe it’s possible. With just a one-goal difference, we must keep that in mind during the match.”

Despite the challenge, Gallardo viewed it as an opportunity. “This match presents a beautiful challenge. It’s a chance to achieve something that might seem impossible. We will prepare with the determination needed to turn the result around and win in Brazil. It’s a challenge and a positive experience, not pressure.”

He concluded with confidence. “This is a great opportunity. We are facing a team of equal level and one of the top contenders for the Cup. Even with a one-goal deficit, I believe we can do it. If we play well, we’ll have our chances.”

River will take on Palmeiras on Wednesday, with the Brazilian team coming off a 4-1 win against Fortaleza in their league match.
