Gary Lineker highlighted Matheus Cunha and another Manchester United player after the team lost 2-1 to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday.
Even though they didn’t earn any points, there were some positive aspects in their performance.
Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers scored first just before half-time with a solid goal in the 45th minute. Matheus Cunha equalized for United in first-half stoppage time.
Patrick Dorgu seized a loose ball after winning it from Matty Cash, allowing Cunha to curl a fine shot past Emiliano Martinez to level the game.
The score was 1-1 at half-time, but Rogers struck again after the break, scoring the match-winner.
United couldn’t find an equalizer in the second half, with Rogers netting both goals for Villa.
Cunha had a late opportunity to score again but missed the target with his header from close range.
Despite the disappointing result, Gary Lineker shared on The Rest Is Football podcast that he sees real progress under Ruben Amorim.
The former Match of the Day host also mentioned Cunha’s signing from Wolves as a positive move for the club.
“I see improvement in Manchester United this season,” he said. “There’s been a lot of pessimism, but I genuinely see a team that is progressing,” Lineker commented.
He added, “It’s slow progress, but definitely moving in the right direction. Cunha is a really good player. He should have scored that header, though.”
“He should just head it back where it came from. Despite that, he finished his goal really well,” Lineker noted.
“They’re finding a better balance, especially considering the injuries in defense.”
