Gary Neville Supports Kobbie Mainoo’s Decision to Leave Manchester United

Neville acknowledged that Mainoo might view moving on as a beneficial step for his career.

The issue, according to Neville, is largely due to Mainoo’s competition with Bruno Fernandes.

With the current United formation typically featuring just two central midfielders, Fernandes is almost a guaranteed starter, while Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte offer some rotation.

Mainoo, not being seen as a defensive midfielder, would find himself competing directly with Fernandes for a starting spot, which is a tough task given Fernandes’ skill.

Neville added, “I understand Kobbie’s perspective: he may think, ‘If I can play next to Bruno, that’s great. But if it’s me or him, he’s always going to play. He’s fantastic.’”

For a young player eager for experience, such limited chances can be disheartening.

With increasing domestic pressures, the club may need to consider whether to keep the promising talent or allow him to seek playing time elsewhere.

Other United legends, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, have also suggested that Mainoo should consider moving on to safeguard his career.
