Manchester United is starting a lengthy recruitment process, with Ineos planning to interview numerous candidates before making a decision.
Sam Allardyce has suggested Carlo Ancelotti as the best option to bring stability to Old Trafford.
Gary Neville supports this view in The Overlap newsletter, sharing his reasons for believing Ancelotti is the right fit.
Neville highlighted four important qualities essential for the role: handling the media, achieving success with high-profile players, understanding the Premier League, and grasping what makes United unique. He feels Ancelotti meets all these criteria.
Neville mentioned, “To meet all four requirements is quite special. The standout candidate for me is Carlo Ancelotti, though this might mean waiting until late July if Brazil reaches the World Cup final.”
“No one else comes as close to meeting these needs. Interestingly, the club spoke with Carlo shortly before his retirement in 2013, which could have simplified this entire process.”
“However, at that time, he was nearing an agreement to join Real Madrid, so what could have been an ideal choice didn’t happen.”
Neville also considers Keane and Scholes’ choices
While Ancelotti is at the top of his list, Neville also acknowledges the suggestions made by Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, which complete his top three.
“Following Ancelotti, my next candidates would be Thomas Tuchel and Eddie Howe, as recommended by Roy Keane and one of the options mentioned by Ashworth for 2024.”
“Both candidates are well-acquainted with the Premier League and have Champions League experience. Howe has now won a major trophy as well.”
“Tuchel has the edge in terms of experience and the quality of his trophies, having won the Champions League, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1.”
“He also reached a Champions League final with PSG. Although he has used a back three at times, he is adaptable enough to align with United’s style and can play with a back four.”
The hiring process could lead to two distinct outcomes for United: immediate success or long-term development, depending on Ineos’s priorities at the moment.
