Diego Simeone has been considered for the managerial position at Manchester United. The 55-year-old Argentine has earned a strong reputation during his tenure at Atletico Madrid.
The club plans to hire a new permanent manager at the end of the 2025-26 Premier League season, following the departure of former Sporting CP coach Ruben Amorim.
Gary Neville suggested that a coach like Ernesto Valverde might be as suitable as Simeone. He noted Valverde’s tactics align with those used by leading European clubs today. He also mentioned that the 4-4-2 formation, familiar during Sir Alex Ferguson’s era, resembles the setups employed by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City now.
Simeone is recognized for his aggressive playing style, focusing on a strong midfield to drive the team forward. Neville compared current tactics to those used by past United managers, highlighting the club’s historical approach.
“Simeone is a 4-4-2 manager who plays aggressively, even if it can be defensive at times,” Neville remarked. “Manchester United has spent £20 million a year on player wages. Why not allocate that budget to hiring the best manager available?”
Diego Simeone may have missed the chance to join Manchester United
In 2023, Simeone signed a new contract with Atletico Madrid, keeping him at the club until 2027. He has enjoyed considerable success during his time there, especially given the dominance of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
However, his name has not been frequently mentioned in connection with the United job lately, indicating that opportunity might have passed.
Additionally, there is speculation about Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner as a potential candidate. He is regarded as a strong option to take over from Amorim in the long run.
It’s still unclear if the 51-year-old Austrian plans to leave Selhurst Park for a move north at the end of the season.
