In 2014, Liverpool was very close to winning the English league title for the first time since 1990. However, Manchester City won the championship that year, finishing just two points ahead. A key match in that season was Liverpool’s 0-2 home loss to Chelsea. The first goal in that game came after Steven Gerrard slipped in the middle of the field, which allowed an opponent a clear path to score. That incident is still frequently discussed.

“The incident in the Chelsea match… it makes me feel sick. But that’s life. You have to live with it. Do I think about it every single day? No. But I have to accept it and be mature enough to move on. I can’t change it.”

“From time to time, those difficult moments come back to mind. But so do the good ones, like Istanbul or the FA Cup. I hate to lose. I hate not achieving things. I sit here now knowing I never won the Premier League. Not just that year, but every time we were close. As the captain of Liverpool, I felt I should have delivered it. So I take responsibility for that. But I don’t get stuck on specific moments, good or bad. I just handle them when they come to mind,” Gerrard explained while speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s podcast.

Liverpool went on to win its first Premier League title in 2020, after Gerrard was no longer with the team. The Premier League was formed in 1992.
