Girona will face Atletico Madrid at the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi on Sunday. Girona is fighting against relegation, while Atletico aims to continue their winning streak after three consecutive victories.
Girona has a long injury list that weakens their chances against Atletico. Donny van de Beek is out with an Achilles tendon injury, along with Cristhian Stuani (calf), Portu (knee), and Abel Ruiz (muscle). Juan Carlos has a cruciate ligament injury and won’t return until early March 2026. Ricard Artero is out with a broken ankle, while David Lopez (hamstring) and Vladyslav Krapyvtsov (Achilles) are also unavailable. Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi is missing due to the Africa Cup of Nations, limiting Girona’s attacking options. Hugo Rincon is a doubt due to physical issues.
Atletico Madrid has fewer injury concerns, but there are late fitness updates for coach Diego Simeone’s squad. Centre-back José María Giménez is doubtful with a hamstring injury, and midfielder Álex Baena is also questionable due to a similar issue. Defender Clément Lenglet is out with a knee injury until January. Captain Koke has shown great form in midfield, and Marcos Llorente is expected to be available. Simeone commented in his pre-match press conference that Llorente looked fit, and a decision will be made shortly regarding his playing status.
Girona has lost just one of their last five league matches, with two wins and two draws. They have held teams like Real Madrid and Real Betis to 1-1 draws, showing they can compete with top clubs. Recently, they secured a 2-1 away win against Real Sociedad. Nonetheless, their defensive record is troubling, having conceded 30 goals in 16 matches, which ranks among the worst in La Liga. Currently, they are in 18th place with 15 points.
Atletico Madrid has been consistent this season, positioned fourth with 34 points from 17 matches, achieving 10 wins, 4 draws, and 3 losses. Their recent performance includes a 2-1 win over Valencia, where contributions from Koke and Antoine Griezmann were vital.
Girona: Gazzaniga; Martinez, Reis, Blind, Moreno; Witsel, Martin; Tsygankov, Lemar, Gil; Vanat.
Atletico Madrid: Oblak; Molina, Pubill, Hancko, Ruggeri; Simeone, Barrios, Koke, Gonzalez; Sorloth, Alvarez.
The Girona vs Atletico Madrid match will be broadcast on various platforms. In the UK, coverage is available through Sky Sports and DAZN.
