Pep Guardiola agrees with Arne Slot that set pieces are making the Premier League less enjoyable to watch.
Guardiola expressed his views at a press conference on Monday, stating that many games in the Premier League these days are “not a joy to watch.”
Slot acknowledged this as the “new reality of the Premier League,” but noted that the league remains “interesting due to its competitiveness.”
Pep Guardiola on Set Pieces in the Premier League
Ahead of Manchester City‘s game against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday, Guardiola mentioned that teams must adapt to the growing importance of set pieces.
“Set pieces have become significant. It was different when I began my managerial career,” he said on Tuesday.
“When I was younger, people in England celebrated corners and free-kicks like they were goals. That hasn’t changed.”
“Arsenal is an example of how to handle this aspect. Four years ago in the NBA, three-point shots weren’t as common, but now many teams use them. It’s part of the evolution of the game.
“You can complain, but you must adapt. It’s part of the sport and varies from country to country, with each club having its own approach.”
“I understand why this is happening and, in some ways, I agree with Slot.”
When asked about the pushing and pulling during corners, Guardiola said, “I have my thoughts on that, but I won’t share them. I have already discussed it with the players.”
