Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola called his team’s victory at Liverpool a great showcase for the Premier League.
City kept their title hopes alive with a 2-1 win at Liverpool on Sunday. Late goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland helped them come from behind, marking only their fourth win at Anfield in 54 games.
This was Guardiola’s first away win at Liverpool with fans present, making it a significant win for the season. City’s victory reduced Arsenal‘s lead in the title race to six points ahead of a full round of matches in the week.
Guardiola praised his team’s spirit as they recovered from Dominik Szoboszlai’s opening free-kick to claim all three points.
Silva equalized, and Haaland sealed the game with a penalty in stoppage time after Alisson brought down Matheus Nunes in the box.
City nearly scored again through Rayan Cherki, but Szoboszlai was penalized and sent off for a foul leading up to that goal. After a tense finish, Guardiola reflected on the important win for his team.
“It was a great showcase for the Premier League. The first half was solid, though we lost a bit of momentum in the second half. Anfield has that effect,” he said, speaking to BBC Match of the Day.
“We then played more directly, but we lost the ball and became passive. Szoboszlai made a fantastic strike, and then, led by Bernardo, we came back.
“The spirit was there; the first half was really good, but we felt some fatigue in the second half. Omar and Erling were not as active, which caused us some struggles.”
