Pep Guardiola praised Rayan Cherki after the Man City player scored a “fantastic” goal against Brentford.
Manchester City advanced to the semi-finals of the League Cup on Wednesday night, winning 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
Cherki opened the scoring with a spectacular goal in the 32nd minute. After a corner from Divine Musaka, the ball came to him at the edge of the box. He quickly maneuvered past Mikkel Damsgaard and fired a shot into the top corner.
Savinho added a second goal in the second half, with a shot that deflected off a defender and went over the goalkeeper.
Guardiola described Cherki as “exceptional” near the opponent’s 18-yard box.
“It was a fantastic goal—anyone can see that he is a fantastic player,” Guardiola said.
He added that he has seen similar goals from players like Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne, expressing happiness that Cherki’s goal opened the game.
City will now face Newcastle United in a two-legged tie for a spot in the final at Wembley. Newcastle defeated Fulham 2-1 at home, with a late header from Lewis Miley sealing the game.
The first leg will be held at St. James’ Park on January 12, with the second leg scheduled for the week of February 2.
