Pep Guardiola was hesitant to blame Man City’s loss to Man Utd in the Manchester Derby on the missed red card for Diogo Dalot on Saturday.
Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu both scored in the second half at Old Trafford, giving the Red Devils a well-deserved victory over their rivals.
The hosts had a lucky moment just ten minutes into the match when Diogo Dalot made contact with Jeremy Doku’s shin. Dalot received a yellow card, confirmed by VAR, as the contact was deemed light and not excessive.
Pep Guardiola comments on key decision after Man Utd defeat
When asked if Dalot deserved a red card, Guardiola told Sky Sports: “You could argue that, and it could have changed the game. Many situations happen.
“It’s easy for me to say it should have been a red card. That’s not the point; we need to improve, and we didn’t do that today.”
Guardiola made the surprising choice to substitute Erling Haaland as part of a triple change, which also included Bernardo Silva and Doku, while City were trying to score late in the game. When asked if this was to manage their energy, he replied: “Partly yes. We needed fresh energy. It’s about how many opportunities we can create.”
City has now not won any of their last four Premier League matches, placing them six points behind leaders Arsenal, although City has played one extra game.
“It’s about how we develop as a team,” he added. “I feel we’ve done some good things so far. To improve, we might need to take a step back. The season is long, and we have to keep analyzing.”
