Deportivo Saprissa’s head coach Vladimir Quesada announced after the team’s 3-1 victory over Guadalupe that forward Gustavo Herrera will temporarily leave the club to join Panama’s U-20 national team. He has been selected for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, taking place from September 27 to October 19.
This news comes at a sensitive time for Saprissa, which is just getting back on track after a tough period marked by elimination from the Central American Cup and consecutive league losses to Alajuelense and Puntarenas. While Herrera’s absence is acknowledged, the coaching staff is not overly concerned, as Quesada pointed out that the team has sufficient depth to fill the gap.
“Gustavo leaves tomorrow for Chile to join his national team, and we feel secure because we have other players ready to step up. We hope he performs well and has a great World Cup,” Quesada said at a press conference.
This call-up is a key chance for Herrera to demonstrate his skills on a larger stage. Although Saprissa will be without him for league matches, his return could bring more confidence and energy if he performs well in the World Cup. This temporary absence could benefit both the player and the club in the long run.
