The Republic of Ireland has secured a place in the FIFA World Cup playoffs after a dramatic victory. Following a recent 2-0 win against Portugal, the team traveled to Hungary and won the crucial match 3-2 to book their spot. In Group F, Hungary needed only a draw to qualify, but Ireland’s win pushed them to second place with 10 points. This is a significant turnaround for the Irish team, which had only four points after the first four games. Troy Parrott was the standout performer, scoring a hat-trick to lead his team to victory.

Hungary started strongly, with Dániel Lukács scoring in the third minute from a pass by Szoboszlai. Ireland responded in the 15th minute when Parrott scored from a penalty to level the score. Barnabás Varga put Hungary back in the lead in the 37th minute with an excellent goal, assisted by Kerkez. As the game progressed, Hungary defended their lead and appeared set to secure their playoff qualification. However, Parrott gave Ireland a lifeline in the 80th minute, scoring his second goal with an assist from Finn Azaz. With the score tied, Hungary focused on defense. The decisive moment came deep in injury time. In the 96th minute, Parrott capitalized on a pass from Liam Scales as the Hungarian goalkeeper moved forward, sealing the win for Ireland. This match also marked the first time an Irish player has scored an away hat-trick. Ireland will now look to carry this momentum into the playoffs to qualify for the World Cup.
