Costa Rica’s national team faces intense criticism after a dramatic 3-3 draw against Haiti in San José, reports EFE. This match, part of the final round of Concacaf qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, angered fans. Chants for the resignation of Mexican head coach Miguel “Piojo” Herrera echoed throughout the stadium.

Costa Rica held a 2-0 lead at halftime, but allowed Haiti to take control in the second half. A last-minute goal from defender Juan Pablo Vargas secured a point, but it did little to calm the frustration. At the post-match press conference, Herrera addressed questions about his future: “It would be cowardly for me to resign, but I am working. Obviously the fans are not happy, but we must keep fighting.”

Local media highlighted the team’s pattern of losing leads. Just days before, Costa Rica had drawn 1-1 with Nicaragua after being ahead 1-0. Herrera acknowledged, “The team is winning 2-0, and in 20 minutes you lose the lead and style of play. We made careless mistakes, stopped controlling the ball, and let the opponent take charge.” He expressed confusion over the team’s lack of focus.

The coach took full responsibility for the situation. “I am in charge, and all the blame falls on me. They brought me here to succeed, and it has to happen,” Herrera stated, insisting that he will not resign immediately. “I won’t make decisions out of anger. We have a month to develop a plan to earn points,” he added.

After two rounds, Honduras tops Group C with 4 points, followed by Costa Rica and Haiti with 2 points each, and Nicaragua with 1. Only the group winner will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup. In October, Costa Rica will visit San Pedro Sula for a crucial match against Honduras.
